Daily Mashup:Carlos Pena,Desmond Jennings, Aybar’s wrist & more

Jennings unlikely to see time with Rays this year

Super prospect Desmond Jennings will most likely NOT see time on the 25 man roster this year, unless something extraordinary happens, so says Rays Senior VP of Baseball Operations Gerry Hunsicker.

Jennings has catapulted his way through the Rays farm system so far, but outfield is one of the deepest positions in the organization, so they are taking their time.

Perhaps my dream of seeing Carl Crawford, Desmond Jennings and B.J. Upton roaming the same outfield will never come to fruition.

My gut tells me, Crawford will be traded because we can not afford to keep him on a long term deal, and the fans will be screaming for Jennings to fill his place–but it will probably be filled by underachieving speedster Fernando Perez until the 2011 season starts.

Pena the target of trade talk

Much like Crawford, slugging first basemen Carlos Pena will likely exit stage right before seasons end if the team is out of the race and can not strike a long term deal with Pena. Considered by many to be washed up or a bust before arriving to Tampa, Pena has solidified himself as a power threat at first for the Rays, with a glove skills to boot, nabbing a Gold Glove Award in 2008.

Aybar’s injured wrist

Back up infielder and spark plug off the bench Willy Aybar will miss at least a week with a sprained wrist. Not worth reading much into now because he is pretty well a lock for a spot on the 25 man roster, but expect to see more of Dan Johnson, Reid Brignac and Sean Rodriguez and unfortunately Joe Dillon this spring.
